How can nutritional disorders be caused by poor husbandry?

The most common nutritional disorder in captive animals is probably insufficient calcium, which is essesntial to building strong bones. I once kept a treefrog for about 2 years, and fed it nothing but insects without any calcium supplements. It developed rickets, had muscle cramps, and died even though it was a chubby little frog that otherwise looked healthy.
